Allergens – What you should know
An allergen is a substance which causes a persons immune system to react to the presence of an allergen in their body. Allergens are ubiquitous in nature and effect people in different ways. Reactions to an allergen when it occurs can result in such symptoms as redness of the skin, difficulty in swallowing and abdominal pain.
In certain cases an allergen can cause anaphylaxis which can result in death. Severe allergen reactions are rare and may not be life threatening if treated on time. It is important for sufferers to determine whether they have a sensitivity to a particular food or a genuine food allergy.
