€139,000 Fine for Fatal Accident

November 9, 2015 | biocare

Quinn Building Products which produces pre-cast concrete products was fined  €139,000 after an employee was involved in a fatal accident.

Investigators established wedged segments of a steel rope used for tensioning loads were splayed resulting in the rope gradually slipping during tensioning releasing a force estimated to be in the region of 6 tones and resulting in two individual steel rope strands striking an employee. The court heard the Company did not have a robust system in place to inspect and maintain the equipment in good repair.

In imposing the fine Judge Ramsey stated the Company had substantial profits and assets but had failed to ensure the safety of employees and to ensure work equipment was maintained in good working order and good repair.
