Work is Good for Health
Working in the private, public or voluntary sector is regarded as being good for your health according to occupational health physician Dr. Deirdre Gleeson. Delivering a key note address to a human resources and safety practitioners conference, Dr. Gleeson reminded delegates to remember this important fact when dealing with employee rehabilitation matters in the workplace. Dr. Gleeson demonstrated statistically there is only a 10% chance of being gainfully re-employed within 12 months if a person has been out of work due to an illness. It is now accepted by occupational physicians being out of work for prolonged periods poses a significant risk to health and well being with those affected experiencing symptoms of low self esteem, psychological distress and incapacity due to long term unemployment.
